N.H. could be decisive battleground
Boston Globe // Matt Viser
WASHINGTON – New Hampshire offers a mere four electoral votes. But President Obama and Mitt Romney are fiercely pursuing the hearts and minds of the Granite State’s notoriously finicky electorate in a race that could come down to the wire in November. New Hampshire is seen as one of about 14 swing states in this election, and the only one in New England. Obama visited the state twice in the last five months; Michelle Obama was in Concord last month, and Vice President Joe Biden has been to the state three times this year. For Romney, the significance of New Hampshire is personal as well as political. The state is home to his summer residence and was the launch pad of his candidacy last summer. He was a regular visitor before the hotly contested primary in January. And Tuesday night, instead of celebrating in one of the five states holding a primary that day, Romney is returning to the Granite State for a speech and a victory party that his campaign considers his official pivot to the general election.
Big money in a big way for Obama’s reelection campaign
Washington Post // T.W. Farnam
President Obama’s reelection campaign has been rapidly increasing the number of big money “bundlers” collecting checks for his reelection, doubling the number of financiers who have brought in at least $500,000.The influx during the first quarter of the year shows the president is getting an especially warm embrace from Hollywood and the broader entertainment industry, partly making up for a drop in support from Wall Street after Democrats passed broad new regulations for the financial sector, according to a list of fundraisers released by the campaign on Friday.
Swing-state unemployment down, Obama’s chances up
AP // Paul Wiseman
The improving economy is swinging the pendulum in President Barack Obama’s favor in the 14 states where the presidential election will likely be decided. Recent polls show Obama gaining an edge over his likely Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, in several so-called swing states — those that are considered up for grabs. What’s made the difference is that unemployment has dropped more sharply in several swing states than in the nation as a whole. A resurgence in manufacturing is helping the economy — and Obama’s chances — in the industrial states of Ohio and Michigan.
Poll Finds Public Skeptical, Leaning Slightly Democratic
National Journal // Matthew Cooper
As the presidential and congressional election season rolls on, the political landscape seems somewhat more favorable for Democrats than for Republicans, but neither party has been able to overcome the deep distrust that Americans seem to have for Congress, and neither side can afford to be anything less than nervous come Election Day. The newest findings of the United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection Poll show a public that’s predisposed to voting more Democratic. In a head-to-head race, President Obama bests Mitt Romney 47 percent to 39 percent, with 9 percent of respondents saying neither and 5 percent refusing or not knowing. Likewise, 50 percent of respondents wanted Democrats to keep control of the U.S. Senate, compared to 39 percent who favored a GOP majority. And by a 3 point margin, 46 percent to 43 percent, those surveyed said they wanted Democrats to take control of the House—down from a much sharper 11 percent lead as recently as January. Democrats found their strongest support among minorities and women.
Romney’s fiscal fantasy plan
Washington Post // Lawrence Summers
Political arithmetic is always suspect, and one should always examine carefully the claims of those seeking votes. Smart observers have learned to distinguish between the claims of political candidates and their advisers and proposals that have been evaluated by independent scorekeepers such as the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). This principle was aptly illustrated by the “budget analysis” Mitt Romney’s chief economic adviser, Glenn Hubbard, recently put forward. In a Wall Street Journal op-edthis week, Hubbard constructs a budget plan that he imagines President Obama might propose someday, engages in a set of his own extrapolations and then makes assertions about it. He does not discuss the actual Obama plan or how it has been evaluated by the CBO. Nor does Hubbard invest his credibility in defending the claims that Romney has made about his own fiscal plans. He simply states that “Yes, President Obama and Mitt Romney have budgets with competing visions. But Gov. Romney’s budget makes tough choices” — without delving into the specifics or trade-offs that Romney’s “tough choices” entail.
Mitt Romney’s media coverage has been more positive than President Obama’s, study finds
Boston Globe // Callum Borchers
Mitt Romney complained last week of a “vast left-wing conspiracy”in the media, but a study published todayrevealed the presumptive Republican nominee has enjoyed more positive press coverage than President Obama in recent months. The Pew Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism found that negative coverage of Obama outweighed positive coverage in each of 15 weeks between Jan. 2 and April 15. Romney, meanwhile, had six weeks of mostly positive stories and another four in which positive and negative coverage were roughly equal. In fact, positive stories about the former Massachusetts governor have outnumbered negative ones almost 2-to-1 since the Feb. 28 Michigan primary, which Romney won.
Mr. Romney’s secret life
Washington Post // Editorial
MITT ROMNEY’S contemptuous attitude toward the importance of public disclosure is increasingly troubling. Whether it involves the details of his personal finances or the identity of his big fundraisers, the presumptive Republican is setting a new, low bar for transparency — one that does not augur well for how the Romney White House would conduct itself if he were elected. First is the matter of tax returns. Mr. Romney’s campaign, belatedly and under pressure, released a single year’s worth of tax information in January along with a summary for the 2011 return
The Amnesia Candidate
New York Times // Paul Krugman
Just how stupid does Mitt Romneythink we are? If you’ve been following his campaign from the beginning, that’s a question you have probably asked many times. But the question was raised with particular force last week, when Mr. Romney tried to make a closed drywall factory in Ohio a symbol of the Obama administration’s economic failure. It was a symbol, all right — but not in the way he intended. First of all, many reporters quickly noted a point that Mr. Romney somehow failed to mention: George W. Bush, not Barack Obama, was president when the factory in question was closed. Does the Romney campaign expect Americans to blame President Obamafor his predecessor’s policy failure?
Karl Rove: Obama Is Winning
TIME // Adam Sorensen
Conservative horcrux Karl Rove is out with his first official electoral college projectionof 2012 and… it’s really bullish on Obama. Rove has South Carolina, which McCain won by 9 points in 2008, rated as a toss-up, and Texas–Texas–merely leaning Republican. The result, in Rove’s model, is 284 electoral votes within Obama’s grasp, 172 for Romney and 82 toss-ups.
Now, maybe this is some kind of devilishly brilliant plot to sow complacency among the ranks of the enemy, but Rove’s predictions were pretty spot-on in 2008and 2010. Either way, it has to be a little spooky for Democrats or Republicans looking at his map. [Via Weigel]
Just back from the National Women’s Conference #women2012 – watched this great video.
Reauthorize the Violence against women act –
You would think this is given – but the right wing has a problem protecting all human beings – really?

Friend –
This week, the Senate may not reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.
Since this bipartisan legislation first passed in 1994, it’s been reauthorized twice without a hitch. And it’s been tremendously successful in helping to combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
So it should be a no-brainer, right? Not to the Senate GOP, not in an election year, apparently.
Republicans are willing to throw away the entire law now that it helps protect lesbians, gay men, undocumented immigrants, and Native Americans. Do they believe acts of violence committed against these groups don’t matter as much?
The Senate’s voting on the Act any moment now, and we need to put pressure on the GOP to pass it.
Since this law passed, it has helped reduce the annual rate of domestic violence by an astounding 53 percent. The rate of women killed by an intimate partner has dropped 34 percent.
Its programs, including violence prevention programs, shelters and rape crisis centers, and funding for the investigation and prosecution of violent crimes have made a world of difference in giving victims of violence a safe place to turn.
It has without a doubt saved thousands of lives.
And Senate Republicans are ready to roll back all our progress.
This year’s Act would make sure that LGBT Americans receive equal treatment for services, it would make it easier for undocumented immigrants to come forward as victims and provide temporary visas in certain cases, and let Native Americans on reservations go to tribal courts for abuse cases. With these additional protections, the GOP has promised to fight it every step of the way.
If Congress votes against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, all of these programs could grind to a halt, and the hundreds of thousands of women who rely on them will once again be left on their own.
Unfortunately, the GOP’s resistance is just another example of putting women’s health and well-being on the line in order to score a few cheap, political points with their base.
We can’t stand by and let them take away this critical legislation.
Before the Senate votes this week, add your name in support of protecting all victims of domestic and sexual violence, no matter who they are:
http://my.democrats.org/Reauthorize-the-Violence-Against-Women-Act
And keep an eye on when they do vote — because we’ll be keeping the pressure on.
Thanks for your help,

West Wing Week: 4/20/12 or “Roll Tide”
This week, the President visited one of the Sunshine State’s largest ports, attended the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, announced new steps to strengthen oversight of energy markets, welcomed champion NASCAR drivers and the Alabama Crimson Tide football team to the White House, and traveled to Ohio to speak with unemployed workers about the importance of job training program. That’s April 13th to April 19th or “Roll Tide.”
INSIDE THE CAMPAIGN
Obama camp pushes for Latino vote
CNN // Gregory Wallace
President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign unveiled a new “Latinos for Obama” initiative Wednesday and sought to portray Republicans as pushing “snake oil” policies harmful to Latinos. Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey said Republicans – including the party’s presidential contenders – spoke on immigration using “a pejorative language that goes directly to our community.” “The reality is we look at this as the civil rights issue of our time,” Menendez said on a conference call with reporters.
Obama Delicately Assaults Romney Over Transparency
ABC // Matt Negrin
President Obama is withdrawing from one war, the war over women, but he is escalating another: the war over transparency. Obama’s reelection team was out in full force Monday to put pressure on Mitt Romney over what Democrats say is a history of secrecy, in both his personal life and his political ambitions. They organized press conferences and seized on reports from Sunday in which Romney was overheard disclosing new details of his policies to rich donors to his campaign.
Democrats blast Mitt Romney hours before his speech at closed National Gypsum plant in Lorain
Cleveland Plains Dealer // Henry GomezAnother day on the 2012 campaign trail, another prebuttal — this one from Democrats. About 15 supporters of President Barack Obama gathered this morning outside the closed National Gypsum drywall factory in Lorain to take shots at Mitt Romney. Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and former Massachusetts governor, was due at the plant a few hours later to counter remarks Obama made Wednesday in a speech in nearby Elyria. Romney spent Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C., where he delivered what his campaign called a prebuttal of Obama’s Democratic National Convention acceptance speech slated for this summer.
Fighting for Students – Keeping Student Loan Interest Rates Low
Unbeknownst to many, more than 7.4 million students with federal student loans will see their interest rates double on July 1, unless Congress steps in to keep them low. For each year Congress allows the rate to double, the average student with these loans racks up an additional $1,000 in debt.
- At a time when Americans owe more on student loans than credit cards, President Obama believes we must reward hard work and responsibility by keeping interest rates on student loans low so more Americans get a fair shot at an affordable college education, the skills they need to find a good job, and a clear path to middle class.
- That’s why this weekend, President Obama will launch a concerted effort to get Congress to stop the interest rate on student loans from doubling in July.
- On Saturday, in his weekly address, the President will reiterate his State of the Union call on Congress to put forward and pass legislation to prevent this loan hike from taking place.
- On Tuesday, President Obama will visit the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Colorado at Boulder and on Wednesday he will visit the University of Iowa. At each stop he will speak with students about the critical need for Congress to act.
- The White House will also kick off a social media campaign using Twitter, Facebook, and Google+, centered around the hashtag #DontDoubleMyRate.
- White House staff have been meeting and will continue to meet with members of Congress in order to get legislation that would prevent this rate hike on students. Staff has also been meeting with student advocacy groups like US PIRG, Student PIRG, Young Invincibles, and Campus Progress to get the word out among students about the coming rate hike if Congress refuses to stop it.
- The President’s student loan interest rate push will continue throughout the spring and early summer until Congress passes legislation to keep interest rates low and continue to give students the chance to get the college education they need to get the jobs of today and tomorrow.
Update on the Buffett Rule
Friends:
I wanted to make sure you heard the news on the Buffett Rule coming out of the Senate this week.
Senate Republicans filibustered the bill, blocking debate and preventing a simple up-or-down vote, despite the fact that a majority of senators supported the law.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans like you added your name to the call to pass the rule, and a recent CNN poll showed that almost three-quarters of Americans support the Buffett Rule. Monday’s result was disappointing, but it was not entirely unexpected. Republican leadership, from Mitt Romney to Mitch McConnell, has consistently lined up to defend tax breaks and loopholes for millionaires and billionaires at the expense of the middle class and the health of our economy. Apparently they think it’s fair that Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than his secretary.
It’s not fair, and it’s not right for the economy either. The Buffett Rule is an important part of the president’s plan to make tough choices on spending and taxes to bring down the deficit and invest in the middle class. And with supporters like you keeping the heat on, the Buffett Rule is going to be a defining issue in this race. We’re going to make sure the voters know President Obama is fighting for middle-class security, while Mitt Romney protects tax loopholes for himself and other millionaires.
Thank you for adding your voice to this debate. This isn’t over, and with your help, we’ll keep fighting for an economy built to last, where everyone pays their fair share.

Campaigns Plan Maximum Push to Raise Money
New York Times // Nicholas Confessore
The big money in presidential politics is about to get a whole lot bigger. Aides and leading donors to Mitt Romney are preparing a major expansion of the campaign’s fund-raising efforts to prepare for a general election contest against President Obama, with the goal of raising up to $600 million, according to several people involved in the discussions. Republican-leaning outside groups and Democratic-leaning unions are planning to spend hundreds of millions more.
Biden Says Republicans Want a ‘Romney Rule’
New York Times // Michael Shear
Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.sought on Thursday to tie Mitt Romneydirectly to Republican opposition to higher taxes on millionaires, saying they want a “Romney Rule” that doubles down on tax cuts for the wealthy. Speaking at an event in New Hampshire, Mr. Biden lashed out at Mr. Romney and Republicans in Congress as the impediments to Democratic efforts to pass what they call the “Buffett Rule” for people who make more than $1 million a year. “Wealthy people are just as patriotic as middle-class people, as poor people, and they know they should be doing more,” Mr. Biden said. “We’re not supposed to have a system with one set of rules for the wealthy and one set of rules for everyone else.”
Romney Wraps It Up
Huffington Post // Lincoln Mitchell
The Republican nominating season was good entertainment, but much less competitive than many had hoped. By the end of the first week of April, Mitt Romney had wrapped up his party’s nomination to such a degree that only a major unforeseen circumstance, which is extremely unlikely, can derail him. Romney’s success occurred despite his history of being a moderate Republican, the difficulty he continues to have connecting with voters, his extraordinary personal wealth and his penchant for gaffes and verbal missteps.
Why Romney Shouldn’t Bother Fighting in the ‘Women Wars’
TIME // Adam Sorensen
“I was disappointed in listening to the President as he’s saying, ‘Oh Republicans are waging a war on women,’” Romney said at a Wednesday campaign rally in Hartford, an event painstakingly choreographed to flaunt Romney’s robust female support base. “The real war on women is being waged by the President’s failed economic policies.” Romney’s campaign has been obsessing over this point in recent days, disseminating what looks like a damning statisticacross every possible medium: 92.3% of the jobs lost during Obama’s tenure belonged to women. That figure, if you calculate it the way the Romney campaign does, is technically accurate. But it’s also incredibly misleading. The labor force participation rate for women is actually near its historical high and the recession, if anything, was a little harder on men.
American Crossroads vs. President Obama
Washington Post // Chris Cillizza and Aaron Blake
The biggest news of the 2012 presidential election on Tuesday wasn’t Rick Santorumdropping out of the Republican primary. It was American Crossroads, a conservative super PAC, launching television ads in six swing states hitting President Obama. Karl Rove, former chief political adviser to former President George W. Bush, gestures as he addresses members of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce in Williamsburg, Va., Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010. (AP Photo/Steve Helber) Santorum’s decision, while somewhat surprising in its abruptness, changed very little in the working dynamics of the race. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney was going to be the Republican presidential nominee before Santorum dropped out. Nothing about Santorum’s announcement changed that.
The Two Economies
New York Times // David Brooks
The creative dynamism of American business is astounding and a little terrifying. Over the past five years, amid turmoil and uncertainty, American businesses have shed employees, becoming more efficient and more productive. According to The Wall Street Journal on Monday, the revenue per employee at S.&P. 500 companies increased from $378,000 in 2007 to $420,000 in 2011. These efficiency gains are boosting the American economy overall and American exports in particular. Two years ago, President Obama promised to double exports over the next five years. The U.S. might actually meet that target. As Tyler Cowen reports in a fantastic article in The American Interestcalled “What Export-Oriented America Means,” American exports are surging.
Yes, Obama’s Comments on the Court Made Sense
The New Republic // Jonathan Cohn
President Obama caused quite a stir last week with a pair of comments he made about the Supreme Court. Some critics said he was citing constitutional law incorrectly. Others said he was trying to intimidate the justices. Some said he was doing both things. The intimidation charge was just silly. Obama told reporters he was “confident” the Supreme Court would uphold the Affordable Care Act. That’s the sort of thing politicians say all the time. Intimidating the court would have been threatening to disregard it, as President Andrew Jackson is said to have done in 1832—or, perhaps, hauling the justices before congressional committees, as President-wannabe Newt Gingrich promised to do just a few months ago.
Sensible improvements on immigration
Washington Post // Editorial
PRESIDENT OBAMA has gotten more notice for what he’s failed to do on immigration policy than for what he’s done right. The fact remains that his administration is taking steps to rationalize what has become a deeply dysfunctional system. Meanwhile Republicans, increasingly nervous that they have antagonized Hispanics with their hostility to illegal immigrants, are seeking a way back into the good graces of the country’s fastest-growing minority voting bloc. Taken together, this picture presents a stark contrast between one party trying to get something done and another that can think only of limiting the political fallout caused by obstructionism.

Romney Waffles on Equal Pay, Isn’t Willing to Stand Up For Women and Their Families
From the DNC to our inbox – here’s the thing…
It’s no surprise women don’t trust Mitt Romney to stand up for them and their families; he isn’t willing to do it.
Mitt Romney spent the Republican primary joining Republican attacks on women, and now he’s losing among women by 19 points. Romney is trying and failing to Etch-A-Sketch away his record on women by hypocritically misleading voters and attacking President Obama’s record on women and jobs. It’s no surprise women don’t trust Romney to stand up for them – he isn’t willing to do it.
This week, when asked whether Romney supports the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act that helps women fight for equal pay, his campaign tersely replied “we’ll get back to you on that.” Romney isn’t willing to stand up for working women across America who on average earn just 77 cents on the dollar. Romney now says he’s not going to change current pay equity laws, suggesting he opposes the Paycheck Fairness Act.
o Please see this campaign video on Romney and the Lilly Ledbetter Act.
Women should have the ability to take their bosses to court to get the same pay as their male coworkers. Anyone who wants to be president shouldn’t have to think about whether they support pursuing every possible avenue to ensuring women get the same pay for the same work as men. America’s economic security depends on it.
Romney’s extreme comments have left him underwater with women. Romney himself has said the Supreme Court should overturn Roe v. Wade, that he would “get rid of” Planned Parenthood, and that he supports the Blunt Amendment that would give women’s health decisions to their bosses.
Romney’s attacks are both hypocritical and wrong. Romney has no plan to keep teachers on the job and no plan to accelerate job creation now to strengthen the recovery. In fact, Romney’s plans include tax increases that disproportionately hurt women, raising taxes on 18 million working families.
Under President Obama’s leadership, women are actually gaining jobs during the recovery, and the President has a plan to get women – and all Americans – back to work now. His budget would help support 320,000 teacher jobs, more than two-thirds of which would likely go to women.
Over the past 25 months, women have gained nearly 1.2 million private-sector jobs. That starkly contrasts the situation President Obama inherited. Almost 300,000 women lost their jobs in the month President Obama took office, making it the worst month on record for women’s jobs losses.
o President Obama’s measures have helped keep 400,000 teachers in classrooms, kept nurses and health care professionals on the job and helped put women back to work.
o He’s put payroll tax cuts into the pockets of nearly 75 million working women while passing 18 tax cuts for women-owned small businesses.
From Elizabeth Warren on the Buffett Rule – we couldn’t agree more!
I wanted to forward one more email to you today. Like you, I’ve signed up for a few email lists.
On Monday, President Obama’s team sent an email about the Buffett Rule — legislation that makes sure people who make more than $1 million a year pay their fair share in taxes.
The President didn’t ask me to do this, but I wanted to double check that you’d seen this email. It’s that important.
In 2009, there were 22,000 households making more than $1 million annually but paying less than 15% of their income in income taxes — and 1,470 paid no federal income taxes at all.
My opponent, Republican Senator Scott Brown, agrees with Mitt Romney that it’s okay for millionaires and billionaires to pay a lower tax rate than everyone else. He wants to block the Buffett Rule. I think that’s wrong, and I’m standing with President Obama on this.
To me, the Buffett Rule shows what this upcoming election is all about. It’s a clear choice: do we want a Senator who protects millionaires and billionaires while voting against rebuilding roads and bridges and voting against preventing layoffs for our teachers?
Or do we want to level the playing field, to change the rules so millionaires don’t pay a lower tax rate than everyone else, and to use that money to honor our promises to our parents and to make the investments so more kids have their chance to get ahead?
Thanks,
Elizabeth

Elizabeth –
Warren Buffett, a billionaire, pays a lower tax rate than his secretary.
Think that’s unfair? So does Warren Buffett.
Right now, millionaires and billionaires have nearly the lowest tax rates they’ve had in 50 years, while everyone else picks up the tab.
So President Obama is asking Congress to pass a commonsense bill, known as the Buffett Rule, to fix the tax code and make sure that millionaires and billionaires pay at least the same share of their income in taxes as middle-class families.
The Buffett Rule would reduce the deficit while helping to pay for investments in education, clean energy, jobs, and other programs that will help our economy grow.
If you think that’s fair, then speak up for it before Congress votes next week — stand with President Obama in asking the richest Americans to pay their fair share.
Many Republicans are dead-set against this commonsense step, so the unfortunate reality is that next week’s vote may not go our way.
But tax fairness is one of the defining issues in this election, and supporting this policy is one of the touchstones of this campaign.
Not only does Mitt Romney oppose the Buffett Rule, but he wants to protect special breaks and loopholes that help wealthy Americans like himself avoid paying their fair share — and he wants to shower them with even more tax breaks paid for by middle-class families and seniors.
If that’s not the kind of country you want to see for the next four years, do something about it now.
